552 ResidenceThe new owners of this turn of the century 2,100 square foot rowhouse loved the location, the beautiful front facade, and remaining period details, but prior renovations had left the house feeling disjointed, cramped, and dated.
We reorganized the plan, placing the kitchen and living room back on the 1st floor where they belonged. To make the small footprint of the 1st floor feel as large as possible, we opted for an open floor plan, filled the back facade with new windows, and raised the ceiling as high as we could. By replacing and repositioning the original stair (it did not comply with code), we were able to fit a walk-in closet, stacking washer/dryer, and an additional bathroom onto the 2nd floor all without sacrificing comfort or utility in any of the resulting spaces At strategic locations, we maintained and/or salvaged original interior details which adds character to the home and helps the interior and exterior of the home feel connected. The resulting home has light-filled rooms which reflect a relaxed and modern sensibility while still being sympathetic to the hierarchy and character of the original home’s. |
